The first and very important thing to understand about PCOS is that it is now referred to as a neuroendocrine condition, which refers to the involvement of the brain (neuro) and hormonal (endocrine) system.

The word syndrome in PCOS refers to a collection of symptoms.
As far as symptoms are concerned, there are many, and they can vary.

You might be aware of the main symptoms, such as:
→ Obesity
→ Infertility
→ Acne

But there are other symptoms of PCOS which can also have quite an impact on a woman’s wellbeing and quality of life.

→ Psychological symptoms like anxiety and depression.
→ Higher potential for cardiovascular disease in line with increased weight and associated inflammation.
→ Sleep disturbances like sleep apnoea and insomnia.
→ Digestive issues with IBS-type symptoms like bloating due to gut microbiome imbalances.
→ Other skin-related symptoms like skin tags on the neck and under arms, and acanthosis nigricans (darkening of the skin).
→ Severe and painful, cystic-type acne.
→ Excess hair growth on the face.
→ Hair loss from the scalp due to a higher level of androgenic hormone DHT within the hair follicle.
→ Extreme tiredness and fatigue.

1️⃣ Do not fear the supermarket organic fruit and veg aisle:
Keep an eye out for deals and special offers—you might notice that sometimes the organic options aren’t much more expensive than non-organic.

Don’t forget to watch out for those yellow stickers, more often than than not delicious organic produce that’s still fresh can be found amongst the discounts.

💡 Top tip - try not to stick to your usual go-to fruits and veggies. Lesser ‘popular’ products can always be found discounted. It’s a great way to try new varieties and widen your nutrition palette.

2️⃣ If you’re able to find a local organic farm stall where you can buy seasonal produce, you’ll find the veggies are generally lower priced than in supermarkets
You’ll often discover unique veggies that you won’t find on supermarket shelves.

Infertility can sadly be one of the symptoms of PC

Infertility can sadly be one of the symptoms of PCOS.

This is due to missing or irregular cycles, which result in less frequent ovulation, but also possible underdeveloped follicles /eggs and poorer egg quality.

This can make it harder for women to get pregnant if they have PCOS.

However, it's really important to know that with careful management of nutrition and lifestyle, including maintaining healthy weight, reducing inflammation, supporting egg quality and hormonal balance, women with PCOS can and do get pregnant.
